Outside Pocket is the musical offspring of Greg Scheer, who composes original jazz tunes for the group. The music could be called “Neo-Standards,” with styles ranging from straight ahead swing to bossa to funk to ballads. OP features a rotating cast of Grand Rapids’ finest–Steve Talaga, Gary Mccoury, Eddie Eicher, Paul Brewer, Doc Sawyer, Jim Cooper, and others–performing in configurations as small as a duo or trio and as large as the band that appears on their 2023 album Grace Notes, with horns, vibes, and full band.
